For the past month the only mixed martial arts news we’ve
been hearing has been about the happenings outside the cage, but we get back to
the action inside the octagon at UFC 145.
Modesto’s very own, and one of the UFC’s youngest stars,
Michael “Mayday” McDonald returns to the octagon in a bantamweight battle
between MMA veteran Miguel Torres. McDonald, 14-1, is on a seven-fight win
streak, which includes his first three UFC fights. His latest win was at UFC
139 in San Jose, which came via KO in just 56 seconds of the first-round. A win
over Torres will push McDonald into possible title contention and make him a
Top-5 UFC bantamweight.
In other UFC news, San Francisco’s own Darren “BC” Uyenoyama
was slated to make his debut in the still expanding UFC flyweight division on
May 5 at UFC on FOX 3. He was slated to face TUF 14 winner, and knockout
threat, John Dodson. However, due to undisclosed medical reasons, Uyenoyama has
been forced off the card. UFC newcomer Tim Elliot is replacing him.
Speaking of that May 5 card, headliner Nate Diaz won’t be
the only Diaz brother in action this May. His older brother, Nick, might be
taking a hiatus from mixed martial arts, but that hasn’t stopped him from
continuing his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu career.
Nick is returning to his roots on May 12, as he takes on
multi-time BJJ World Champion Braulio Estima in a grappling super fight at the
World Jiu-Jitsu Expo in Long Beach, Calif. Diaz, who is a decorated grappler
and a world champion himself, has trained under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu umbrella
since he was 16 and has become one of the top grapplers in the past decade.
As April winds
down and we turn to the summer time, the UFC and Strikeforce are planning some
major events and several Northern California fighters will be in the middle of
it all. Stick to @FightSportsCSN and never miss any of the news.
