Will Rick Story outlast Martin Kampmann in their UFC welterweight battle? |
Story is looking to rebound after his decision loss this
past June to Charlie Brenneman, which came after a six-fight win streak.
Kampmann has lost his last two fights to Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez, each
of which went three rounds.
Kampmann will be coming in with a height and slight reach
advantage, which he will most likely use to subdue Story enough to move the
fight to the mat. Although Story has a collegiate wrestling background,
Kampmann is the more dangerous ground fighter. He has a brown belt in jiu-jitsu
and uses an array of submission holds to try and end a bout.
Four of Kampmann’s eight UFC wins have come by way of
submission and he has also shown he is capable of standing and striking with
any competitor. Even though Story will be on the lookout for any of Kampmann’s
submission attempts, I expect to see Story try to wrestle the match to the
ground as well.
His striking is strong, but it is his mat awareness that has
proved to be a blessing. Story has shown he is more than capable of finishing a
match, as he has submission and TKO victories in his career, but his ability to
control a fight once it is on the ground can prove to be a deciding factor on
most occasions.
However, this might not be one of those occasions. It is
difficult to figure out how this fight will go. Both men have similar strengths
and similar weaknesses.
Of all the fights on the UFC 139 card, this might be the
most evenly matched fight. Expect a back and forth brawl between Kampmann and
Story. Both are looking for a win and are looking to get into welterweight
title contention.
