Kyle Kingsbury takes on Stephan Bonnar to open the 139 main card in San Jose this Saturday. |
Several of the fighters on the card have ties to Northern
California and the opening bout on the main card features such a fighter. Out
of San Jose’s AKA, Kyle Kingsbury will fight in front of his hometown crowd for
the first time in a light heavyweight bout versus TUF alumni Stephan Bonnar.
Kingsbury looks to extend his four-fight win streak, while Bonnar will look to
build on his last two victories.
These two fighters promise to put on an exciting three-round
battle that will get the audience in attendance and viewers at home excited for
the main card. Let’s take a closer look at each fighter.
Bonnar has been the fighter who was once expected to turn
into someone who would always be in title contention. Ever since his UFC debut
on The Ultimate Fighter and his epic battle with Forrest Griffin at the TUF 1
Finale, Bonnar has been quite the inconsistent fighter. He’s followed up short
win streaks with losing streaks. He has been unable to build on consistent wins
and put himself in title contention in what is now a very deep weight class.
Kingsbury, on the other hand, has been riding a solid win
streak since his UFC debut loss to Tom Lawlor. Three of his four wins have come
by way of decisions, two of those three decisions garnered Fight of the Night
honors. Kingsbury is still searching for that career making victory and a win
over a veteran like Bonnar could be just that. Even with an up-and-down career,
Bonnar is still considered a top light heavyweight and Kingsbury should gain
much respect if he were to win.
I fully expect this match to go back and forth. Bonnar is
the more skilled ground fighter and he will try to take things down early and
often. His main priority should be to submit Kingsbury. For Kingsbury, his main
objective should be to keep the fight standing. Kingsbury has strong hands and
the hometown factor could play huge in this match.
