Lightweight "super-fight" on hold
As soon as Dana White mentioned the name of Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, the mixed martial arts community was abuzz. Everyone, from fighters to writers, expected a huge announcement soon from Melendez's camp.
There came an announcement on Thursday, but not the one everyone expected. Strikeforce announced that on December 17th Melendez will defend his title against number one contender Jorge Masvidal.
While the world...I mean, the MMA world was hoping to hear about a future Melendez vs. Frankie Edgar title unification bout, a fight between Melendez and Masvidal is just as intriguing.
But, there remains one small question. Who will Edgar face in his next title bout? Luckily, that won't have to be answered for quite some time as Edgar's nose seemed to be broken in his fight at UFC 136. While we're on the subject, we might as well take a look at one of the possible ways of figuring that out.
Next month the UFC will make its debut on network television, one of the fights on the Anaheim card is Ben Henderson vs. Clay Guida. Both men are worthy of title shots and with Melendez currently out of the picture, this could be a #1 contender's match.
Although, I wouldn't be surprised if the winner of the Bendo/Guida match ends up in a #1 contender's bout versus the winner of Melendez/Masvidal.
Plenty of fight fans would enjoy a Melendez vs. Edgar title unification bout, but as Melendez says "it is what it is".
